Now what?
I've finished the composition for the last assignment in the Nancy Crow Sets and Variables workshop. I used commercial Kona cotton fabric, and would like to do the next one in hand dyes. The piece is pretty large, although that is hard to tell in the photo. The dark side is meant to be low value, and dark, but here is actually more definition in the real piece.
Now, the part I hate - basting the layers together. It's hard on my back, and I haven't figured out any shortcuts. It's 65" wide by 35" high. I plan to quilt it in a grid pattern, with a dark red thread. It went through many changes from the workshop, and I learned a lot from making it.

Nice piece Jeanne. Is the left hand side all black--I like how it emerges to the lighter side.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann. It's very dark navy, gray, brown and black on the left. I don't think the camera can adjust for that much difference between the two sides. Once it's quilted, I'll get a better photo of it.
ReplyDeleteI love the energy in this piece! I can't wait to see it quilted.
ReplyDeleteIt's terrific! Love the variations, the extra happenstance motifs, and the color and value transition.
ReplyDeleteI'm empathize with you about basting. Next time I'd use bed risers to raise the legs of my dining room table. Or take it to my guild's drop-in where I can get many helping hands.
Wow! What a powerful design. Can't wait to see it quilted.
ReplyDeleteBasting is the only part I could do without. Lately I fuse everything. I don't know if that is any easier on the back but it is easier for me.
I could use a fused batting, but I think it's hard to iron it on when it's a large piece. I'm just going to bit the bullet, and listen to a book while I baste!
ReplyDeleteHey, what about one of the quilting frames from the Grace Company? Would that be a big help?
ReplyDeleteI happen to have one in my basement, but no place to put it. Think I'll be selling it on E-Bay instead!
ReplyDeleteOne other thought on the fusing thing I actually use misty fuse costs more but it isn't stiff juries out on whether it gave my newer machine the fits but I don't think so I seem to have a tension problem somewhere grrrrrrr. Anyway I just use pieces of it. I never seemed to have good success with the fusible batting. But at the end of the day I'm not wild about this method either best I have come up with so far.
